Now or Laters? New Music from Drake & TheDream, Kelly Rowland and T-Pain

The good news is, we are starting to see a lot more new music being premiered for a year that has so far been pretty lackluster musically. The lineup of artists who will be releasing products in the next 3 – 5 months has me a bit excited. However, will these projects be any good is the question?

Toronto Native and Hip hop’s biggest thing since Bling, Drake has begun leaking singles for his major label debut album, Thank Me Later.  His first single Over has been getting a favorable response after debuting at #35 on the Billboard Hot 100. This track, Shut it Down features the LoveKing over a beat produced by 40 and Omen. This was originally supposed to be Drake’s lead single, but I am glad they changed direction. I like the song, even though it sounds like a reject from Kanye’s 808’s and Heartbreaks and Dream’s LoveHate (simultaneous reject). I think Drake needs to give us a little bit more Hip Hop before he delves into his auto-tuned creative side. #Noshade the song is hot!

But that’s just my opinion…what did ya’ll think of the song?

*Update* TheDream confirmed with MTVnews that the released track is an unfinished version.

Drake featuring TheDream – Shut It Down

Even though Kelly Rowland has done the unthinkable by leaving her former management team (Beyonce’s father, Matthew Knowles) to seek out management that will actually work to make her a star, I’m still not really checking for Kelly. Now, I think she’s a beautiful girl, and she has a nice voice, I just don’t see Kelly as a solo star or entertainer. She appears to be more like the sidepiece/jumpoff, but not the main chick. Feel me?

Anyways, again, my opinion 🙂 Hopefully, Kelly can prove me wrong this time around.

Ms Rowland apparently stole purchased the track that Teyana Taylor was wishing hoping to use as her next single and recorded a pretty decent song with producer Bangladesh. I’ve listened to this song three times now trying to get a good feel for it since the Internets are saying this one is a Banger. Arrrgggghhh I just don’t hear it. What is the song about? Maybe if I heard it in a club with some alcohol in me? That appears to be what it takes for me to like some of the music I’ve been hearing lately…I need to stop listening to Stevie and Aretha…

What do you guys think of this song? As a small sidenote, I sort of think this song may have been better suited for Teyana *dodges rocks*

Music News ROLO: Jay-z is NOT a Fan, Sade nearly does 500K, TheDream readies LoveKing

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday! I was lazy as hail all day 😉 But let’s get some news out of the way.

According to US Magazine, Jay-z was not impressed with the latest efforts to re-vamp Michael Jackson’s famed ‘We Are the World‘ benefit song into a 2010 version to help benefit the cause for Haiti. The song/video debuted at the Opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. It featured a unique group of artists ranging from Kanye West (wearing his best MJ impersonation jacket),to the Jonas brothers, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx and Justin Bieber who opened the song. Justin. Bieber.

About the re-make, Jay-Z quipped,

I know everybody is gonna take this wrong: ‘We Are the World,’ I love it, and I understand the point and think it’s great. But I think ‘We Are the World’ is like [Michael Jackson‘s] ‘Thriller’ to me. I don’t ever wanna see it touched,”

I agree with Jay-Z. If you haven’t seen the video, watch the 2010 version here. I actually liked the effort and liked some of the vocal arrangements, but between Wyclef screaming like a fool and Lil Wayne, Akon & T-Pain’s auto-tuned mess, I was left shaking my head. Plus we all know the God MC told us Auto-tune was dead back in ’09…

Jay-Z continued,

I’m a fan of music. I know the plight and everything that’s going on in Haiti. I applaud the efforts: Millions have been raised] through text [donations] to Haiti. So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but ‘We Are The World’ is [musically] untouchable like ‘Thriller’ is untouchable. Some things are just untouchable. It was a valiant effort, but for me, it’s gonna be untouchable.

And in true Jay-z fashion, he was able to reflect the situation on himself:

I think it’s time for us to make a new [song]. I tried to do that with ‘Stranded,’ [the tune Jay Z, Rihanna and U2’s Bono and The Edge premiered at the ‘Hope for Haiti Now’ telethon]. I didn’t try to make ‘We Are the World,’ but I tried to make our take on how we felt.

If you haven’t heard the song Stranded, click here. I actually really like this song.

In other R&B news, Singer Sade has pulled a Maxwell; she has returned from her 10-year hiatus to triumphantly return the number one spot on the charts with her newest effort, Soldier of Love.

Melt in Your Ears – Robin Thicke feat. Jay-Z: Meiple (Me I Play)

Well Damn!! I guess Robin ain’t playin this time around!! He is fightin’ for that urban whiteboy crown! Snagging a guest sport by Hola Hovito himself is no easy feat for an underrated R&B artist. But Robin does it with such ease. Robin pairs up with Jeff Bhasker (who we last heard about on Alicia’s Broken Heart) and Pro-Jay to create this interesting track. It is nothing like what is on the radio nowadays! Note to self: Must learn more about Mr. Bhasker!

Robin mixes things up in this song by rapping/speaking his lyrics with a yuppy accent where you can hear him winking as he sings. The song has an international vibe to it, with a young lady moaning seductively (?) in French on the chorus and vivid drum patterns dominating the song. I can’t really see this being a radio hit…maybe on iTunes and definitely on the ‘Net, but the best thing it will do is create some much-needed buzz for Robin’s project.

Ha, my boy Tochi was spewin’ some hate on my Facebook page the other day about how stale of an artist he felt Robin was. He might have to eat his words after this one! (Might…)

Music News ROLO: 4th Quarter Music Plus Videos by 50cent & Ne-Yo, Jay-Z & Alicia, Chris Brown

So I mentioned I would try to keep up with everything so lets run the Music ROLO!

First off, My dude over at The Doc Report did a nice Rundown of the what we should expect music-wise for the fourth quarter(year end) in music. There are some exciting releases from artists like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Shakira and Britney Spears all being released November 23rd (which he dubs ‘Super Monday’). Also Amerie and Ryan Leslie are releasing albums today (November 3rd)! R.Kelly will be dropping Dec. 1st, while Usher will battle Robin Thicke and Gucci Mane come December 8th. And of course the last push before Christmas will see releases from Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Lil Wayne and Rihanna’s ex, Chris Brown. Heavy. Make sure you check out the list in its entirety. I didn’t even know about some of these…Usher, are you really ready to come back for the crown again?? Hmmmm.

50 Cent & Kelly Rowland make beautiful music together – oh yeah, and Ne-Yo!

Cute video and a good look for Ms Rowland who looks cute as ever! Kelly has the most beautiful skin! I thought the song was going to be better than this – more hood, gutter 50, but this is actually a nice change for him. And damn, he is lookin right in the video too! Maybe its the new grill? Ne-Yo is forgettable to me in this song. Why is that?

Melt in Your Ears: New Music from Alicia Keys!

One of my favourite artists, Alicia Keys has released some new music. Following her success of her last album As I Am, Alicia will likely be releasing a new album this Christmas on J records. Her new song is called Doesn’t Mean Anything. Keys follows the same formula of sincere heartfelt love songs with piano-driven production, stirring lyrics and strong vocals. The more I listen to this song, the more grows on me. I had the pleasure of seeing Alicia in concert last year for her As I Am tour when she visited Atlanta and it was a great show. I am excited for her new project!

Alicia Keys – Doesn’t Mean Anything

Also check out the song Alicia did with Jay-z; you know, the infamous MTV performance that was bum-rushed by Bow Wow Lil Mama. This is one of the better songs I have heard from Jay-Z in a while – I think this is the Single he should have released. But timing is everything I guess.

Music News ROLO: Get Caught up!!

So I am a little out of the loop due to last night’s late night activities (I wish) so, I wanted to make sure the CF readers weren’t missing a beat!

Check out these links below for the newest goings-on in the Urban R&B/Hip Hop world – ChokLit Style of course!

Blogger/Radio Personality Miss Info visits R.Kelly’s home in Chicago to preview his new album, Untitled
courtesy of

ChokLit’s take: Are we still going with the Untitled shtick?? Ok Mr. Kelly. I love Kelly’s quote when he mentions his ‘research’ for this project included throwing parties at his mansion for a good month and judging the crowds’ reactions to his music. For his sake, I hope this was a 25+ only party…I love Miss Info 🙂

Jay-Z, Rihanna & Kanye get all  possessive for Run This Town video

ChokLit’s take: This video is on every single blog today so I’m sure you all have seen it already.I chose to watch it with the sound off for my own personal reasons. I love me some Rihanna, but the screeching in this song is a bit much, plus I simply enjoy watching her play dress up instead 🙂 (did that come out wrong??). Of course Rihanna looks stellar and appears ever so confident while performing next to her former Boss. Kanye steals his scenes – the only scenes Rihanna is not dominating. Sorry Hova, we barely noticed ya! Dope video, still.

Butta of the Week! Fabolous & Jay-Z – When the Money Goes

I was forwarded this song by reader 20 Something, and I gotta say – this is a hot one! The first thing that caught me was the beat; its a Killer. When the Money Goes was produced by Sami Wilf and Jermain Dupri. Then you have Loso on the track with spittin’ some real nice metaphors and his flow is nice as ever. Most importantly, Fab is painting a thorough picture with his lyrics of a situation where a female will love the good times when life is good and the money is right; but is not able to Ride when things get rough.  It is a topic Rappers have been talking about for ages. In my opinion, a  Jumpoff will always bounce when the money jumps off – literally. Jay-Z actually lays low on this one, only gracing the chorus. But still, the collabo works great. I just found this video. It pretty much plays out the lyrics to the song nicely. I am wondering if the opening scene with Fab and Jay-Z in the Maybach is a homage to The Sopranos? Still, I like the feel of this video, directed by Parris.  Peep the video below.

Suga & Steez: New Brooklyn Rocawear Campaign

I found this Ad on Kanye’s Blog and thought I’d share. Sometimes I chuckle when I think of the Rocawear Brand of clothing. Their advertisements always portray the clothes (and the people who wear them) as Affluent, Youthful, Urban and Sexy.  But the actual clothes themselves can range from semi-fresh to downright tacky! Also, they can be found anywhere from T.J Maxx or Winners to Unica or Dr.Jay’s.

But I won’t front, ya girl has rocked some Rocawear pieces with the Quickness and has done it well! I have a sassy pair of gold & black Rocawear sandals with a zipper up the heel that do NOT play!rocajacket2

And I love my mesh Rocawear casual jacket with embellishments on the zipper!

So it is always a toss-up with their clothes in my opinion. I haven’t bought anything from their new collection, but I have seen some cute pieces.  And their Men’s stuff is ok as well…but if I want to talk about Urban Men’s clothing, I will only talk about Coogi. But we’ll leave that for a future post.

ChokLitFactory Exclusive: ChokLitFactory’s Top 25 songs of 2008 Part III

Ok, we are back! Finally, we get rid of all the suspense and lace you the TOP 8 songs of 2008! It wasn’t easy crafting the top 8, but I believe I made the right decisions. Some of these songs, you may not even heard of before! What would ya’ll do without me? So check ’em out, then speak on it! What do you guys think?

*Side Note: I’ve gotten rid of the players, so you all know the drill. click or hover on the link and press PLAY!
Here we GO!

8 – Raheem Devaugn – Customer

Raheem started off 2008 with a hit song and a critically-acclaimed record. Customer came out of nowhere and ended up being a hit with the 106&Park crowd. And Raheem seemed to find his writing niche: highly metaphoric, sweet love songs sung to ChokLit ladies 😉

 Raheem DeVaughn – Customer

7 – Jazmine Sullivan – Lions, Tigers and Bears

So, I’m kinda of cheating on this one…technically, this song was just released as a single in the 09, but I had to include it on the list since I first heard it performed by Jazmine in concert  back in 2008. Also because this song may get lost in the Choklit sauce, it being released so early in the year. This song is so dramatic; its music is brooding and deep, clearing the way for Jazmine’s unique vocals. And her lyrics are heartfelt and so true. Many people can attest to that feeling of being afraid of love more so than other earthy dangers. Def one of the best songs musically and lyrically, I’ve heard in years. And Jasmine got robbed blind at the Grammys too ya’ll….
