Still in the W(Rapper): *New Video* Drake – Find Your Love

Drake released the video for his next single, produced by Kanye West, Find Your Love. Anthony Mandler directed the clip in Jamaica with Video model Maliah Michel and Dancehall star Movado. My first thought of the video was that Drake seemed a bit out of place with the gritty background and badman theme, but I do like that he didn’ t try to act like something he  wasn’t. Movado was a scene-stealer and is extra sinister-looking in the video. I think the video enhances the feelings behind the song for me, and I’m definitely feeling the abrupt ending.

This is a good look for Drake! Oh the power of the P.U.S.S.Y…

Music News ROLO: Toni Braxton’s Pulse is Dead? Drake & Kayne are Killin ’em!, Alicia readies Unthinkable Video

Toni Braxton, who enjoyed much success in the early and late 90s, released her sixth studio album, Pulse, this past Tuesday. This is Ton’s first album in five years and her first she for Atlantic records after re-signing her contract with them. Pulse received a decent amount of push from her label, including 3 music videos, a racy performance at the Soul Train Awards (where she kissed singer Trey Songz onstage in front of an audience that included her now ex-husband Keri) and talk show appearances. I must say, I missed nearly all of the promo for this Project, other than the release of Yesterday, her duet with Trey Songz. I did catch up on Hands Tied, her sultry second single off the album.

Last month, Toni commented on album sales and what it means to the Pulse project: “You just want to create, but I know if I don’t sell, I’m not going to be able to make another album.” source.

Estimates are coming in that have Pulse selling 45K – 50K records, the lowest debut in Braxton’s career. Sad to hear, I am a fan of Braxon’s music so I hope this project does well.  I wonder what God we would have to pray to, to see Toni and Babyface reunite one last time…

Check out the video for Hands Tied, which I am loving right now!

ChokLit Fresh: *New Video* Drake drops ‘Over’ while Fab Goes In…

Drake appears to be carrying the torch for Hip Hop right now. While he leaves the cubic zirconium chains and gold teeth for the other rappers, Drake is the clean cut, straight-talking Rapper who actually has something to say. In his video for his first single, Over, Drake hired famed director Anthony Mandler, who is well known for directing stylish, edgy and art-driven videos. The video is definitely solid and entertaining – Drake gives life to his lyrics with such fervor not seen since Kanye’s fiery actions (Where are youYeezy?). Drake explains some of the driving force behind the video and his album, Thank Me Later (now due June 15th) to MTVnews:

“The song is so aggressive, and it’s sort of a love story in the video. It has a lot to do with the album [Thank Me Later]. The album is about finding love, feeling ‘Have I sold my soul’ as far as ‘Will I ever be able to gain the trust of a woman? Will I only be able to be around the dark, evil women? Will I ever find that pure love?’ Those elements are in the video.”

I’m loving this video and I’m excited for Drake’s album. It has been a long time coming so I hope he lives up to the Hype! What do you guys think of the video?

Meanwhile…did you guys hear the song Fab and Nicki Minaj recorded for his Funeral Service Mixtape? He borrows the beat to Gucci Mane’s Lemonade and proceeds to pull no punches. Fab talks about dudes blowing up their girls’ phones (apparently that is a jab at Rob Kardishan and the way his Ex Adrienne Bailon punked him – don’t ask how I know these things). He ends his verse asking, “If you could have Beyonce, would you take Solange?” Ouch!

Now or Laters? Ciara is comin… Usher & Will.I.Am pair up for OMG

Ciara must be almost complete with her fourth album sessions with TheDream & Tricky Stewart because she has already filmed a video for her new single Ride It featuring Ludacris. She is moving full steam ahead with this project despite rumours that her Label isn’t 100% behind the project and Ciara had to foot the bill to record the album. Here is a real bootlegg video preview for the stans fans.

*Sidenote* Ciara may just be back for real this time, Ride It sounds hot!…Get it Ci!!

In the meantime, Ciara also leaked this track Speechless she recorded with TheDream. Some people aren’t feeling it, but I actually really like this song. We could have done without Dream’s vocals on this one though…What do you guys think?

Ciara featuring TheDream – Speechless

Verdict: We like it NOW! Ciara is coming back with the Goodies!

Everybody may love Raymond, like Nikki Minaj insists, but we will have to see once the numbers for sales of his latest effort come in. Raymond Vs Raymond is in stores now. I’ve liked what I’ve heard so far from the project, but from what I’ve been hearing from fans, they are slightly divided. We will have a Album Review for Usher’s new album soon.

In the meantime, Usher has hooked up with Black Eyed Peas frontman and producer, Will.I.Am for another single for his album called OMG. This song has already been getting some major play over in the UK apparently. Caution: This is not the typical Usher jam you may be used to hearing. OMG definitely has a Euro Pop feel to it with auto tune, stadium-echoing cheering and sporadic bass. The Anthony Mandler-directed clip is the best Usher video I’ve seen yet for the project. The style, the movement and choreography is on point. My only gripe is that Usher looks either vacant or uncomfortable in the video…but he’s been like that lately. I’m not mad at Ursh for trying to get that dance/pop money since the ‘Urban’ R&B crowd has labeled him a has-been and have disowned him while they still wait for a miracle from Chris Brown…

Hot ChokLit: Rihanna’s Russian Roulette Video + Cold Case Love

rihannaratedr2

Rihanna has released her Anthony Mandler-directed video for her controversial single, Russian Roulette. In the video, Rihanna is seen playing the deadly game with a young man and a one bullet-loaded gun. In other scenes she is in a locked room with armed guards, then writhing on the cold floor in an empty cell in another scene. One notable scene has Rihanna dodging bullets (!!) underwater as her blood taints the color of the water. An interesting look for the former Miss Sunshine; definitely artistic.

I am a little worried for the remainder of Rihanna’s album, as it seems to be very hard and aggressive – something her fans may not expect from her. I know I don’t find a lot of pleasure listening to depressing music, but hey, maybe that’s just me?

Check out another track on Rihanna’s Rated R album, Cold Case Love that is rumored to be produced by Justin Timberlake.  This song is interesting. It is written and produced very well and has a very epic feel to it. Check it out!

Butta of the Week (continued): Amerie – Heard ‘Em All video

ameriesingle

Here is the full version of Amerie’s video, directed by Anthony Mandler. I noticed that Weezy isn’t in the video or wasn’t included in the single release at all. Hence Amerie begins the song a little awkwardly without the 16-bar intro. Still, this video is pretty hot.  Amerie has definitely stepped up her dancing game on this one, although the moves are not overly difficult. I actually really like the concept of the video as well as its styling and overall feel. Amerie looks comfortable in this grimey yet fashionable role, especially since we are used to seeing her a lot more girly and feminine. Expect to see this video very often on 106 & Park. Did ya’ll like it?

Butta of the Week! Amerie feat. Lil Wayne – Heard ‘Em All

amerie

Amerie’s second single off her forthcoming Love & War album almost slipped through the Choklit cracks. But here it is in all its glory. Heard ’em All features the best of what can safely be called, ‘Amerie’s sound’. It evokes that brassy D.C go-go sound Amerie is well-known for, along with staccato melodies and an urgent, quickened pace. Amerie sounds great on the song as she warns all potential suitors to keep their distance unless they have something real for her.  Also check out a sneak peak of the making of the video for Heard ‘Em All. The remix I posted features Lil Wayne, although I do not see him in this video footage. This definitely looks like the type of song Amerie needs. Why R U was an ok song, but I don’t think it generated the buzz she needed. Amerie really needs a hard-knocking hit to make a dent in this Beyonce/Rihanna-focused music industry & media. The choreography is lookin’ hot too! What do ya’ll think of the song and video?
