Sweet Tooth: Teedra Moses’s Royal Patience Compilation Mixtape

I took my time in posting this because I’ve been trying to work out some kinks behind the scenes here at the CF and also because I wanted to listen to the Mixtape myself first (selfish, I know)! Teedra Moses has released her Royal Patience Compilation Mixtape for your listening pleasure. The compilation is a free download meant to promote her forthcoming album that has been a long time coming, The Lioness.

This is a very nice collection of Moses’ latest work. Teedra has mastered the artistic presence of the vulnerable lover who yearns to be with a man who does not appreciate her. Yet, Teedra does it in a way that makes you empathize with her, not pity or look down on her. Some highlights include R U 4Real (Freesytle), Kisses Never Tasted so Sweet, International Playboi and Realize.

Sweet Tooth: *Video* Monica – Everything to Me

Here is the video for Monica’s Everything to Me. As I mentioned in a previous post, Monica is wearing all Alexander McQueen designs and she dedicates this video to the late designer. Chad Ochocinco plays Monica’s love interest. I assume Monica has the choice of who plays her love interests in her videos. Judging from her past picks that include Jamie Hector (from the Wire), Rapper Young Buck and Derek Luke (Antoine Fischer), Mo likes ’em tall, dark and handsome!

For some reason, director Benny Boom thought it was a good idea to rip the plot from the ‘Hollywood classic’, Obsessed…nonetheless, the video was entertaining and had a cute surprise ending.

Monica looks flawless throughout the video; a class act as usual. My favourite part is Mo’s eyeroll at 1:41 when the stalker tries to approach her man. Monica does not play.

Did you guys like the video? Monica’s album Still Standing will be in stores March 23rd.

Melt in Your Ears: *Video* Leela James – Tell Me You Love Me

The young Singer with the old-school voice and big hair, Leela James has returned to the R&B scene with her new song and video for Tell Me You Love Me. Her new album titled My Soul will be released May 25th, independently on Stax Records. I never really got into James’ music when she first came out, although I did love her voice. At only 26 years old, James is known as having an old soul since her music is often compared and modelled after the R&B music of the 60s and 70s. Tell Me You Love Me is no different as the song samples a rift from The Manhattan’s classic ballad, Then You can Tell Me GoodBye. I’m loving both songs! Best of luck to Leela this time around, hopefully this Single will get her a lot more recognition. What do you guys think of Leela’s song?

Sidenote: Isn’t Leela’s hair amazing? Love it!

Here is the original song Tell Me was sampled from, Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye by The Manhattans.

Laffy Taffy – *Video* Whitney Disappoints in Austrailia

I labeled this post Laffy Taffy – though it is not really funny at all. Whitney Houston performed a concert for fans in Brisbane, Australia this past Monday and I only feel sorry for the fans who probably paid a grip to hear a living legend in person and got this:

At around 2:31 Whitney takes a moment  – one full minute, to ‘compose herself’ in time to hit her big note for the song, I Will Always Love You. At first I thought they gave the mic an echo effect but now I suspect her high note was a taped performance. Especially since during most of the song Houston could barely get her notes straight. It is sad to see Whitney in this condition. It is even sadder to think about all the money these Australian fans must have paid to see her perform. She wouldn’t DARE do this on North American soil! Ms Houston, please do better.

ChokLit’s Choice: Monica Returns with Everything To Me

I know I am late on this one. Singer Monica has been televising her latest adventures back to relevance with her television show, Still Standing, on BET. Monica and her producers, namely Bryan Michael Cox who has been overseeing the project, have been steadily trying to craft that Hit for Monica that her Label would approve. I’ve enjoyed most of the material I heard from the project, but I understood the Label’s hesitation at moving forward. Monica is one of those solid artists from the 90s that struggle to find relevance today in an Industry that feeds on scandal, sex appeal and stunts, sometimes moreso than talent itself.

Luckily, Monica was able to team up with Superproducer Missy Elliot who has an uncanny knack for producing for women in R&B, specifically for Monica. Not only did Missy Executive Produce Monica’s last hit album, After the Storm, including its hit first single, So Gone, she also produced my favorite track off of Monica’s Makings of Me album, A Dozen Roses (You Remind Me).

Monica has officially released her first single off her album Still Standing, called Everything to Me. The song was produced by Missy Elliot and features a sample from Deneice Williams’ Silly of Me. Williams is a popular singer, songwriter and producer who found fame during the early 70s and 80s. She began as a backup singer for Stevie Wonder and Minnie Ripperton. Everything to Me borrows the music from Silly of Me, while Monica sings new vocals. Everything is getting a lot of radio love and airplay, though the song is also drawing critics who say Monica shouldn’t have touched the Classic and can not compare to William’s version. My take: I never knew who Deneice Williams was before this song. (I will hand in my R&B fan card – next week) Williams has a great voice and I enjoy her version, but Monica definitley did her thing! Take a listen at both songs.

Music News ROLO: New Music from J.Holiday and Nivea!

We’re got some promising new music on the R&B scene. J.Holiday is coming back strong for a third effort and Nivea is gearing up for a new album on the strength of her pain. Listen in!

Singer/songwriter J.Holiday returns to the music scene with another sensual and sexually charged song titled Pretty Body. Coming on the heels of TheDream’s release of Love King and the fact that both tracks were produced by the same person, does not fare well with fans. The main difference is J.Holiday’s voice which is arguably smooth and sexy as always. His vocal performance alone should shed some much-needed attention on this song, though I’m not sure it will.  Check the video interview below courtesy of Reader Mr. Knowvember, who is a big J. Holiday fan. Around the 5:00 minute mark J.Holiday does an impressive impromptu song from the dome.

J.Holiday – Pretty Body

Nivea has been garnering some good buzz lately after the release of her video and song for the Say Something Remix she recorded with ATL rapper Rasheeda. Now prepping for her own album release, Nivea has released her own single, Love Hurts to capitalize on said buzz. Her new album will be titled Purple Heart and is rumored to drop in a couple months. No word on if the album will be released through her label Jive.

Butta of the Week: TheDream is the Love King

That n*gga keep playin, change where you layin’ I’m just sayin….

The wait is over: Love King has arrived. Your R&B singer’s favorite R&B dude has released the first single from his final project, both titled Love King. The song is bravado-fest as Dream talks about how he ‘got his money up’ and now has women all over the world. TheDream’s Ego is back, in case you thought it was on hiatus. Love King is a fun song with fun lyrics, reminiscent of Rockin’ that Sh*t and Shawty is the Sh*t.  Dream isn’t saying much, but he usually keeps the first single very light, hook-heavy and radio-friendly. LOS Da Mystro produced the single. What did you guys think of the song?

Hot ChokLit: Rihanna preforms Rude Boy on Ellen

Yes, I know, another Hot ChokLit post for Rihanna, what can I say, #westan for Rih Rih ’round these parts 🙂

Rihanna visited Ellen’s talk show today to preform her hit single, Rude Boy for the live audience. Rihanna was *gasp* dancing, moving her hips, having a good time on stage and singing! Well done! I think she feels more comfortable performing this song and being  flirty while having fun with it. Peep the smile at 3:20 when she attempts her famed Bogle lol!

Sidenote: What are her backup singers wearing???

Music News ROLO: Jay-z is NOT a Fan, Sade nearly does 500K, TheDream readies LoveKing

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday! I was lazy as hail all day 😉 But let’s get some news out of the way.

According to US Magazine, Jay-z was not impressed with the latest efforts to re-vamp Michael Jackson’s famed ‘We Are the World‘ benefit song into a 2010 version to help benefit the cause for Haiti. The song/video debuted at the Opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. It featured a unique group of artists ranging from Kanye West (wearing his best MJ impersonation jacket),to the Jonas brothers, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx and Justin Bieber who opened the song. Justin. Bieber.

About the re-make, Jay-Z quipped,

I know everybody is gonna take this wrong: ‘We Are the World,’ I love it, and I understand the point and think it’s great. But I think ‘We Are the World’ is like [Michael Jackson‘s] ‘Thriller’ to me. I don’t ever wanna see it touched,”

I agree with Jay-Z. If you haven’t seen the video, watch the 2010 version here. I actually liked the effort and liked some of the vocal arrangements, but between Wyclef screaming like a fool and Lil Wayne, Akon & T-Pain’s auto-tuned mess, I was left shaking my head. Plus we all know the God MC told us Auto-tune was dead back in ’09…

Jay-Z continued,

I’m a fan of music. I know the plight and everything that’s going on in Haiti. I applaud the efforts: Millions have been raised] through text [donations] to Haiti. So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but ‘We Are The World’ is [musically] untouchable like ‘Thriller’ is untouchable. Some things are just untouchable. It was a valiant effort, but for me, it’s gonna be untouchable.

And in true Jay-z fashion, he was able to reflect the situation on himself:

I think it’s time for us to make a new [song]. I tried to do that with ‘Stranded,’ [the tune Jay Z, Rihanna and U2’s Bono and The Edge premiered at the ‘Hope for Haiti Now’ telethon]. I didn’t try to make ‘We Are the World,’ but I tried to make our take on how we felt.

If you haven’t heard the song Stranded, click here. I actually really like this song.

In other R&B news, Singer Sade has pulled a Maxwell; she has returned from her 10-year hiatus to triumphantly return the number one spot on the charts with her newest effort, Soldier of Love.

Melt in Your Ears: LeToya Luckett – Good to Me

First I wanted to say, Happy Valentine’s Day to the Lovers! I’m not the biggest fan of this ‘holiday’, but to commemorate I got my bottle of Sangiovese and Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo & Juliet – good times! As a treat for my readers, LeToya Luckett’s newest video for her fourth single, Good To Me. The video features the very sexy but rumored downlow Keston Kater. It also features Letoya in performance mode with a band and her backup singers – a real treat for her fans because we never get to see Letoya just singing. The notes homegirl is hitting in this song put a smile on my face. Many people were muttering about how Letoya managed to push out a fourth video when her album has not been selling. I think the Haters need to sit down – Letoya is doing her thing and I’m glad she is releasing more music from her underrated album.

Anyways, I’m loving the song and the message. If you are going to be with someone, they should just try to be good to you and do right by you. That is all one can ask…am I right? Happy V-day!!

Good to Me was directed by AJ Crimson.
