Oldie Butta Goodie Bar: Teedra Moses – Be Your Girl

Holding her pillow tight...

Holding her pillow tight...

Teedra Moses is the Underground R&B Chick that you may or may not have heard of just yet. But if you haven’t, you should definitely look her up. A former wardrobe stylist, Teedra got her start in music late, after beginning by writing for artists like Mary J. Blige, Nivea and Christina Milian. After inking a deal in 2004 with TVT Records, Teedra released her debut album on the indie label, Complex Simplicity. This song was her first single.

I love this song because it has an old school feel to it, and has a vulnerability in the lyrics and vocals. I love when song sung  by women express that. Think of Aaliyah’s 4 Page Letter (“Momma always told me to be careful who I love…”) or Me’Shell Ndegeocello’s Fool of Me, from the Love & Basketball soundtrack. The music in this song is basic, with a piano and some snares that create an eerie, dark mood. Teedra sings about the feeling of admiring someone from afar and wanting so badly to be in their world. She sings “You gotta feel me/ I would love you good…just wanna be your girl. Hype Williams directs the movie mostly in Harlem and Manhattan, New York. He films Teedra walking against traffic through the busy streets, similar to a Ghost wandering amongst the shadows, waiting for her potential Lover to show face.

Teedra is supposed to bless us wither sophmore album, The Lioness, later this year.  Though sadly I have not heard what label she is signed to (pretty sure TVT folded a couple years ago), who she is working with, or any new material for that has been released.  Regardless if we do her from Teedra again (even though we Really Really hope so!) her music will live on with songs like this , that blessed her debut album.

  1. I love Teedra Moses! I still listen to her first album complex simplicity. She is really an amazing artist. I’ve been waiting for her sophmore album for a minute now but last I heard she was having some label issues. Nonetheless I am still a true fan of the Lioness, can’t wait for her next project! I’ll be waiting….
