Still in the W(rapper) – Kevin Cossom Artist Profile

With the success of songrwriters-turned-superstar singers like, Ne-Yo, The Dream, J.Holiday & Keri Hilson, the song-writer is now becoming quite the hot commodity in the contemporary R&B world. This probably stems from the continuing efforts by Record labels to encourage their artists to be able to connect witht their audiences.  Audiences are not just looking for a pretty face with a decent voice (think male R&B singers, moreso than female ones of which, this is exactly what they are looking for!); they are looking for artists who can tell their own story and can be relatable to their fans. Kevin Cossom is supposed to be just that. He has just been signed to producer Nate ‘Danja’ Hill’s N.A.R.S (New Age Rock Stars) imprint, which is a partnership with Jive Records.

Apparently, Kevin is a very sought-after songwriter and is described as being, the ‘Total Package’. He has written for many Hip Hop artists including, Rick Ross & R.Kelly’s Speedin, Young Jeezy & R.Kelly’s Go Getta, Trey Songz’s No Clothes On, Lloyd Banks’ Karma, amoung many others.  These appearances led to a chance meeting with Danja, who is known for working with superstars like Britney Spears, Mariah Carey & Justin Timberlake. the two bonded instantly and began working on his Label-backed debut album.

I’ve added two tracks that I found to be interesting. The first one, Late Night, sounds very similar to something T-Pain might release, but with actual singing. Actually if sounds like a carbon copy of, Can you believe it. Still, I like the song, it has a nice feel to it. Take a listen here:

The next song, My Ex, featuring Rick Ross is questionable, but gets better after a few listens. There is a nice melody here, a hint of catchiness. The lyrics are mediocre, nothing special. The song is probably saved by Rick Ross’ cameo which isn’t even that memorable either. Also, I think the production is a bit over-bearing (the chords that are played during the chorus) and threatens to over-shadow the lyrics & the song itself. Take a listen and see for yourself!

Everyone is predicting big things for Mr. Cossom in the ’09 so hopefully he’ll come back at us with some real heat. I am also excited to see what Danja will be able to produce, since I haven’t heard a real consistent effort from Danja in terms of production.

What do y’all think of Kevin’s music?

If you like what you heard, you can download Cossum’s EP, named the Pre-Album at his Myspace page here.
