Here we GO!

8 – Raheem Devaugn – Customer

Raheem started off 2008 with a hit song and a critically-acclaimed record. Customer came out of nowhere and ended up being a hit with the 106&Park crowd. And Raheem seemed to find his writing niche: highly metaphoric, sweet love songs sung to ChokLit ladies 😉

 Raheem DeVaughn – Customer

7 – Jazmine Sullivan – Lions, Tigers and Bears

So, I’m kinda of cheating on this one…technically, this song was just released as a single in the 09, but I had to include it on the list since I first heard it performed by Jazmine in concert  back in 2008. Also because this song may get lost in the Choklit sauce, it being released so early in the year. This song is so dramatic; its music is brooding and deep, clearing the way for Jazmine’s unique vocals. And her lyrics are heartfelt and so true. Many people can attest to that feeling of being afraid of love more so than other earthy dangers. Def one of the best songs musically and lyrically, I’ve heard in years. And Jasmine got robbed blind at the Grammys too ya’ll….

6 – Estelle feat. Sean Paul – Come Over (Remix)

It took me a minute to warm up to Estelle, I gotta admit. I didn’t care much for her sing-songy rap vocals, and although American Boy was catchy as hell, I didn’t feel it as much. In fact, I didn’t really pay much attention to Estelle’s voice at all until I heard this song! Her voice is so pretty on this track and rides the slow, reggae-tinged music very nicely. Sean Paul steals the show once again, adding just the right flava and sex appeal to this track. Just makes you want to grab someone close 🙂

5 – Erykah Badu – Honey

Eyrkah Badu is one bad ChokLit lady! She answers to no one and beats to her own drum. She also refuses to be pigeon-holed as being a certain type of artist or making a certain type of music. She returned to the scene in the ’08 with a new album and a new look. Honey, produced by 9th Wonder is a futuristic-sounding little diddy that is sexy, sweet and dope. It makes you nod your head to the beat and smile at the same time. Def one of the better songs of 08, Erykah made her mark once again.

4 – Raphael Saadiq feat. Jay –Z – Oh Girl (Remix)

#4 : ChokLit's Pic 😉

This my jam, ya’ll! I already love Raphael, and he always delivers good, solid music. So he flips the script on this track when he sings in a high-pitched voice, pleading with his lover that he won’t let her down.  And Jay-Z kills his rhyme, showing a softer side, in tune with the whole vibe of the song. Def a must-listen! One of my faves!

3 – Jennifer Hudson – Spot

Jennifer Hudson definitely had some severe highs and lows in her personal life this past year. Lucky for us, this song is one of her highs. One of the most popular songs on the R&B charts in 2008, Jennifer shows off her effortless vocal range on this great song penned by Ne-Yo. She sings with such conviction and confidence in her voice; it was this great marriage of vocals, production and lyrics that made this song a favourite.

Jennifer Hudson – Spotlight

2 – Solange – T.O.N.Y

My ChokLit Ladies, we have all been there. Those one night mistakes, where you sit there wondering, why did I JUST do that?? Solange was definitely onto something. T.O.N.Y stands for “The Other Night Y?” and the song goes through the emotions we all feel when we know that if not for last night…we might have been in Love right now…DANG!

1 – Jazmine Sullivan – Need You Bad

#1 Tha Winner is....

And the winner is….Jazzy! Jazmine Sullivan def had a great year most R&B chicks would kill for! She released a critically acclaimed album, had some decent sales on the charts, and she managed to keep her clothes on why doing so! We can all thank Jazmine for bringing the Soul back to R&B and she spared none of it with her debut song, Need you Bad. Missy Elliot co-signs the track with her fake-Jammy accent (hahah), while Jazmine delivers her voical with such conviction and yearning not heard since the days of Lauryn. She definitely deserved a lot more commercial love for this album, but I’m sure she will have many more opportunities in her long career. That’s it!!

ChokLitable Mentions: These songs didn’t quite make the cut, but there still get a mention for being good, decent tracks from the ’08!

Ney- Yo – Single: This was a great song on its own, but Ne-Yo added NKOTB to it (!!) which took away from its appeal, for me, at least.

Alicia Keys – No One (released 2007), Lesson Learned (one of my fave from her CD), Like you’ll never see me again. Too many good songs on her album, basically

Beyonce – Single Ladies (Put a ring on it): Please see my previoust post 🙂 Just missed the list B!

Whitney Houston & Akon – Like I never left: I would have added this song if not for the fact that J records never felt the need to release it or put any promotion behind it. Great song, nonetheless.

Jordin Sparks  – No Air: this song was a hit in 2008 and brought some good attention to Jordin, who has a nice voice. Maybe I am just hating on the over-sappiness of the lyrics, or the vocals of a certain ‘singer’ who will not be named.

  1. Ummm my only comments r “Customer” the remix with R Kelly is my shit. I question “Come over” being so low on the charts ( saggy breast Estelle not attractive @ all. No one thinks that’s sexy!) everything else was right on Miss Choklitfactory
