ChokLit Fresh: Lil Wayne is Single, Young Jeezy Loses his Mind…

Excuse me while I get back on my Hip Hop ish…

Lil Wayne with labelmate Shanell

I spotted this video over at Miss Info today and trust me, I had this on repeat all morning. I like the vibe of the Single, a song from his No Ceilings Mixtape. Ahhh Lil Wayne; any chick that messes with this guy has got to know what’s up…Wayne sings,

“Put ya hands up if you’re Single for the night,

Ya I’m single, N*gga had to cancel that b*tch like Nino”

Apparently the Tranny chick in the video is a Kim Khardishan look-a-like? Mmmm Kay.

The video was filmed before Wayne began his prison stint. His personal videographer, DJ Scooby Doo directed the clip. What do you guys think?

Young Jeezy will be hitting us with his fourth album, Thug Motivation 103 this Summer. 103 is a followup to The Recession, Jeezy’s Gold-selling hit album released in 2008. His first buzz single Lose My Mind features Plies. This song hit the Internet back in March, though Def Jam is working overtime trying to keep it under wraps. I’m a big Jeezy fan so I’m excited for the album!

Before They Blow-POP! YM’s Shanell’s Mixtape Shut Up & Listen *Free Download*

Shanell at her Mixtape Release Party. Pic courtesy of FreddyO

Choreographer, Singer and songwriter Shanell aka SnL might just be ATL’s best kept secret. Not only is her sound and image refreshing, unapologetic and raw, her music is actually pretty decent as well! We first featured SnL in our Songwriter’s Revenge feature a few months back.

To drum up some publicity for her new Mixtape titled Shut Up and Listen, Shanell’s team sent out invites to her “Baby Shower” where Shanell would be unveiling her child – ie. the Mixtape she had been working on for the past several months. It was a cute marketing ploy since rumours were rampant at the time that Shanell has been seeing labelmate Lil Wayne romantically.

Shut Up And Listen is a solid effort of Trip & B (ATL Style) that exposes several sides of the Artist. Shanell experiments with dance, some house and some Ryan Leslie. She even attempts to re-make Groove Theory’s classic hit, Tell Me with labelmate Jae Millz.

There are some highlights to the Mixtapes and some songs you may want to skip, but overall the collection of songs gets me excited to hear what Shanell has in store for her full length album. Now there is some debate among R&B fans if Shanell can blow or not. I think she definitely has a voice on her, while others call her pitchy. I tend to like when Singers can belt out a tune with great emotion, which Shanell is not afraid to do at all. I just need to hear her preform live to prove the naysayers wrong.

Here are a few cuts from the Mixtape to whet your appetite. Let me know what ya’ll think of the songs below and the Mixtape.

Music News ROLO: *Ladies Love* New Music from Mariah, Monica & Shanell!

Mariah continues to work on her Remix Project titled Angel’s Advocate and the singles continue to leak. Ribbons was one of my favorite uptempo songs on Memoirs and I’m definitely feeling the remix with Ludacris and TheDream both lending verses. Ludacris can still kill a Remix like no other!

Mariah will finally release Angel’s Advocate March 30th, where she will be going up against Usher’s Raymond Vs. Raymond, among others. The album will feature all new remixes as well as duets of songs from her Memoirs album.

Since Atlanta can be called the Mecca of R&B for the new Millennium, it is only natural that it births this brand of New R&B ushered in by artists such as TheDream, Janelle Monae and Shanell. Now signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money Label, Shanell is getting the chance to showcase her talent. I like to describe her music as Trip Pop. It just sounds new age, 80s-inspired and something Prince may approve of. Here she teams up with Lil Wayne (her rumored beau ) and fellow artist Mack Maine for Deadliest Catch. I’m feeling this joint right here! It’s sexy, fresh and different, but in a good way. What do you guys think?

Melt in Your Ears: Nivea – *Video* Love Hurts

These videos are being pumped out a lot faster nowadays!

Even though Rapper Lil Wayne is in the process of being sentenced to up to 12 months at Rikers Island for an incident that occurred last year, he was able to take time out of his busy schedule (that included filming over 30 music videos) to appear as Nivea’s love interest in the new video for her single Love Hurts. This is Nivea’s first single from her forthcoming album, Purple Hearts. Love Hurts was produced by Jnew and written by Chase J.

In the video, Nivea visits a home she once owned with her lover and re-visits the pain associated with the space. There is a twist at the end of the video. The video was directed by Point Blank Period. The Rapper’s presence in the video will definitely elevate the interest in the song and Nivea’s new project. Good luck to her!

Did you guys like the video?

Sweet Tooth: Nivea & Rashieda – Say Something Remix **Updated**

Memo to TheDream > this bud’s for you!

Image courtesty of FreddyO.com

Nivea and Atlanta rapper Rasheeda recorded a remix track to Timbaland & Drake’s song, Say Something, and it is sounding better than the original! Nivea has decided to make a comeback of sorts after dropping Lil Wayne’s baby last year. If you are following the drama that surrounds Nivea and her ex-husband Terius Nash, you’ll notice that these two do a lot of talking to one another through their music. Its all in the lyrics – if you’re quick enough to figure it out. Many times during Dream’s latest album, Love vs. Money, He speaks about heartbreak and the effects love and money has on a relationship. Most poignantly in the song Love vs Money Part II, TheDream lays it all out on the table:

So kiss that n*gga, hug that n*gga,
love that n*gga to death
Go ahead and please that n*gga, feed that n*gga
In time you’ll see the problem’s yourself

Coz when love is your problem…nothing can solve it
When love is the problem (eh!)…money can’t solve it

Finally Nivea has her chance to speak with this song. Have a listen.

Nivea & Rasheeda – Say Something remix

Wish I could pull you out the game, cause it’s the thing that made you change,
It ain’t the money honey, lend me some money honey,
Thought I was your heart before your black card,
You told the world about me but you forgot about me…

**Updated** Here is the video for Say Something. It turned out better than I thought!

So I mentioned I would try to keep up with everything so lets run the Music ROLO!

There are some exciting releases from artists like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Shakira and Britney Spears all being released November 23rd (which he dubs ‘Super Monday’). Also Amerie and Ryan Leslie are releasing albums today (November 3rd)! R.Kelly will be dropping Dec. 1st, while Usher will battle Robin Thicke and Gucci Mane come December 8th. And of course the last push before Christmas will see releases from Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Lil Wayne and Rihanna’s ex, Chris Brown. Heavy. Make sure you check out the list in its entirety. I didn’t even know about some of these…Usher, are you really ready to come back for the crown again?? Hmmmm.

50kelly

50 Cent & Kelly Rowland make beautiful music together – oh yeah, and Ne-Yo!

Cute video and a good look for Ms Rowland who looks cute as ever! Kelly has the most beautiful skin! I thought the song was going to be better than this – more hood, gutter 50, but this is actually a nice change for him. And damn, he is lookin right in the video too! Maybe its the new grill? Ne-Yo is forgettable to me in this song. Why is that?

ChokLit Fresh: Young Money’s New Single – who laid the Hook Best??

Young Moo-la ba-bee

Young Moo-la ba-bee

First off, we must give respect where respect is due. You may have your qualms about Lil Wayne, but you must admit he has an ear (and an eye) for talent. I haven’t been keeping up with the lineup changes as much as I should, but adding Miss Nikki Minaj, Drake, and now Shanell and Omarion were some good looks for YM. Now they have released an ensemble track as a lead single (to a full length album perhaps? yes, I’m late) that is produced by Kane Beatz. The single features Wayne, Gudda Gudda, Nikki Minaj, Drake, Tyga (when did he join YM?) and Jae Millz. There are two versions to this song. It was initially recorded when Omarion was still a part of Young Money (they have since parted ways) and was called Girl You Know. Now that Omarion has left to pursue his own endeavours (O recently signed a deal with EMI records) YM has tapped the talented singer Lloyd for their official single, and also laid a new hook with him for the song now dubbed Bed Rock. The only problem is, the song now sounds too much like an ensemble track because none of the artists appear to be rapping about the same topic.

Regardless, the song is hot. It’s very simplistic, but it works – for me at least. I love the beat on this as well. Only question is, who sang the hook best? I am a big fan of Omarion’s voice period. I’ve always liked the strain in his voice, since it gave him character as a singer. I was definitely excited when I heard he was signed to Young Money, especially after having being dropped by Sony not too long ago. However, I am also a big fan of Lloyd’s as well. Lloyd’s voice is velvety-smooth and is very unique as well. But if I had to choose, I would have to give it to my man O on this one. Although Lloyd has the better hook, Omarion’s voice suites the beat just a tad bit better for me.

But what did ya’ll think??

Omarion’s version:

Lloyd’s version:

**Side Note: I’mma need Wayne and his Young Money crew to start throwin’ some money into more photo shoots for their artists (namely for Nikki) so we Bloggers can have more stock photos to choose from 🙂 And who the f*ck is Gudda Gudda??

Butta of the Week! Amerie feat. Lil Wayne – Heard ‘Em All

amerie

Amerie’s second single off her forthcoming Love & War album almost slipped through the Choklit cracks. But here it is in all its glory. Heard ’em All features the best of what can safely be called, ‘Amerie’s sound’. It evokes that brassy D.C go-go sound Amerie is well-known for, along with staccato melodies and an urgent, quickened pace. Amerie sounds great on the song as she warns all potential suitors to keep their distance unless they have something real for her.  Also check out a sneak peak of the making of the video for Heard ‘Em All. The remix I posted features Lil Wayne, although I do not see him in this video footage. This definitely looks like the type of song Amerie needs. Why R U was an ok song, but I don’t think it generated the buzz she needed. Amerie really needs a hard-knocking hit to make a dent in this Beyonce/Rihanna-focused music industry & media. The choreography is lookin’ hot too! What do ya’ll think of the song and video?

Still In The W(Rapper): Songwriters’ Revenge – Shanell & Ester Dean

shanell

Meet Shanell aka SNL aka the Softer, sexier side of Young Money Entertainment. Formerly belonging to ATL girl group, The Girl’s Club and sister to former Danity Kane Member, D. Woods, Shanell has been flying beneath the radar for a minute now. Looks like Lil Wayne has snatched her up and added her to his growing Young Money Entertainment group. I’ve heard some of her music previously. SNL rides with a Vanity 6/Prince-type swagga, with a strong 80s electro soul feel to her music. She is also a talented songwriter who has written from Danity Kane’s last album. I like Shanell as an artist and I think she has a lot of potential, I’m just not sure who her target market is (gay men perhaps?) and if the mainstream will latch on her sound. Judge for yourself. As for this particular song, I like it – sans the heavy guitars on the hook which are a bit overkill in my opinion.

Shanell feat. Lil Wayne – Play in My Band

esterdean

Ester Dean is a bit of a mystery. For the life of me I cannot find a picture of Ester on the Internet (despite this being the age of the image). She first caught my interest when she featured on a remix (one of many) to Jeremih’s Birthday Sex. Her voice reminds me of Keyshia Cole’s with its rawness and its power. Ester is a songwriter who like fellow Hot ChokLit girl Keri Hilson, is trying to make a name for herself as a solo artist. She is currently signed to Polow Da Don’s Zone 4 Entertainment. While I like Ester’s voice, this song doesn’t do a whole lot for me. Its a typical Polow beat with a chopped-and-screwed  repetetive hook, but the lyrics are far from inspiring. I think Ester may need to return to the Lab with this one, but I’ll keep an ear out for her on future releases. Did ya’ll like it?

Butta of the Week: Electrik Red feat. Lil Wayne – So Good Remix

Sooo, yesterday was our busiest day at the ChokLit Factory yet! Thanks everyone for comin through and showing love! But where the comments at? Next time, next time.

I know this is a late posting, but I didn’t know this video was out yet! So, my bad. Better late than never. You already know, I’m feeling this song, and the Remix is definitely a good look for the Electrik Red ladies. They are rockin’ the Chola look in this video with some cute choreography and the same flirty attitude. Only critique, the girls need to work on their lip-syncing skills…

Wayne shows up halfway through lookin like the self-professed Goblin he is – in nerd glasses no less. Is it me or is Wheezy shrinking? Maybe its just me. Anyways, peep the video, thats all for tonight, I’ll catch up on the weekend! Much Love!
